Tality and ARC Partner to Provide Comprehensive GPS Solution for System Developers
Platform IP Accelerates Integration of GPS
SAN JOSE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 11, 2002--Tality
Corporation and ARC International (LSE:ARK), a leader in
user-customizable processors and software for communications and
consumer products, today announced the availability of new global
positioning satellite (GPS) platform solution. The platform enables
developers of mobile communications and telematics products to easily
integrate a low power GPS module into a range of consumer and
communications applications. The demand for GPS-enabled devices is
expected to grow rapidly during the next few years. According to
Allied Business Intelligence, eighty percent of all new vehicles are
forecast to have GPS capability by 2006.
The platform provides a front to back solution for developers
attempting to implement basic GPS functionality in their SoCs
(systems-on-chip). It implements the digital signal processing section
(DSP) of the GPS receiver by combining Tality's GPS baseband
intellectual property (IP) and ARC's ARCtangent(TM)-A4 user
customizable microprocessor core. The platform solution has been
integrated with Tchip Semiconductor's low power TJ1004 RF front-end
module to verify system operation. The solution is provided in RTL for
hardware design and ANSI-C for software design, allowing for seamless
integration into a target device.
"This tightly integrated solution provides customers with an
accelerated design vehicle for creating GPS-enabled devices," said
Colin Adams, vice president and general manager of Tality's Digital IC
group. "With the demand for GPS functionality growing at such a torrid
pace, platform-based solutions that can be rapidly designed-in are
essential to keep pace with customer requirements."
The platform has been designed for rapid integration into an SoC
solution, allowing customers to configure the design to meet their
specific requirements and drive down the cost of providing GPS
technology.
"Configurable processor technology within GPS is an optimum
solution. System designers are able to use an ARCtangent configuration
to minimize power, silicon area and cost. The combination of RISC/DSP
enables system designers to combine the GPS IP with other system
functions such as AAC/MP3," said Farzad Zarrinfar, senior vice
president of marketing and business development at ARC International.
"Tality's GPS IP is one of a number of system level functions aimed at
the mobile device which allows ARC's customers to put SoC designs
together in record time and lets them achieve their time to silicon
goals."
